Introducing The “MassivePress” WordPress Theme
Just as promised, the MassivePress.com WordPress theme is now available for download. I updated the theme to make it fully compatible with WordPress 2.5 as well as added a few other features including a fully automated “Featured Article” section within the second sidebar, integrated recent comments and a few other little things.
About The Theme
As mentioned before, MassivePress.com will be transitioning to a new concept I have been working on, but the theme should live on. MassivePress is a 3 column widget enabled WordPress theme featuring a thumbnail based posting style which gives you the ability to get more content in front of your users in a way that is clean and organized. Continue reading below for some simple usage instructions and to download the MassivePress WordPress theme. Also, you can view a fully functional demo of this theme at www.massivepress.com.
Writing a Post
Writing a post is pretty standard business with the MassPress WordPress theme. The only thing you really have to do different than usual is create a thumbnail for each post that you make which will be displayed on the front page of your site. Just create an image (140px square) and upload it, then create a custom field called “thumbnail” and paste the location to your post thumbnail in the value field (i.e. “http://www.samplesite.com/thumbnail.jpg). Thats it… you’re done… categorize and publish your post as usual to finish up.
Featured Articles
Using the featured article photo quilt located in the second sidebar is easier than you might think. All you have to do is create a category called “Featured”. Any post you categorize as “Featured” will automatically be displayed in the featured article photo quilt. This section displays the latest 9 articles categorized as featured.
Update Your Tagline
The welcome text displayed on the front page only (right above the featured article photo quilt) can be changed by editing your tagline within your WordPress settings. Just write a simple line or two explaining what your site is about.
Three Unique Sidebars
I have wigitized the first sidebar of the theme which can be changed using the WordPress widgets settings within your site admin. There are actually 3 unique sidbars that can be configured individually including the “Index Sidebar”, “Post Sidebar” and “Page Sidebar”. This allows you to fully customize what your users see on every page of your site. Please keep in mind that that if you use widgets, the default sidebar will be replaced.
Change Your Logo
I have included the source “logo.png” file that was used to create the original MassivePress.com logo within this theme package. All you have to do is edit the logo to your liking, and export it in standard *.jpg format. When you are finished, replace the logo.jpg file located in the “images” folder of the theme with your new logo. The font used for the MassivePress.com logo is “Arno Pro”.
Download the MassivePress Theme
You can download the MassivePress WordPress theme by using the link below. This theme is absolutely FREE so PLEASE leave credit where credit is due when using it. In other words, please DO NOT remove the links within the theme footer.

Hey Jason-
I’m trying to integrate the featured content gallery plugin into MassivePress, but it seems the FCG throws off the spacing of the sidebar content.
How would I go about having the FCG appear before the posts, but manage to keep the sidebar content at the same level instead of being pushed halfway down the page?
May 30th, 2008 at 12:57 am
I have been *waiting* for this one…. for a looooooooong time!
:::: happy dance :::: ur so good ::::
Muah, thanks!
May 30th, 2008 at 3:07 am
how to use this theme??
May 30th, 2008 at 9:39 am
@Wandy… Are you not familiar with WordPress???
May 30th, 2008 at 11:34 am
Where and how do I specifiy the 90×90 px picture for the featured articles picture box?
May 30th, 2008 at 1:56 pm
How do you edit PNG files on a Mac? (for the logo)
May 30th, 2008 at 2:15 pm
@Marcel… You don’t need to specify one because it uses the same image as the post thumbnail.
May 31st, 2008 at 12:30 am
@ Jason: thanks
May 31st, 2008 at 3:48 am
Man, this them is awesome !
June 1st, 2008 at 5:09 am

hi,
there are small stars in the title of posts, I think it’s a voting system, but how we run?
where is the tutorial on how récupére data?
thank you
June 1st, 2008 at 6:20 am
Great theme!
But I can’t get the css file to work. Wordpress tells me the stylesheet is missing even if it is there and in the correct folder.
What to do?
Cheers
Martin
June 2nd, 2008 at 5:34 am
@Didier… I put the source logo.png file in the root of the theme package. You can edit it using Adobe Fireworks. Also… you need to install WP PostRatings for star ratings.
@Martin… Are you sure you extracted everything correctly? I double checked my theme package and everything is there.
June 2nd, 2008 at 5:23 pm
Looks like you’ve got another winner. I’m a big fan of your work. Using the Charred theme on my site now.
June 2nd, 2008 at 5:58 pm
I love this theme! Am I the only one having trouble with Lightbox making prototype.js halt though?
June 2nd, 2008 at 7:38 pm
Wow! That’s a great theme - simple but beautiful. It perfectly suits my needs for a new blog, except the white background! So, I will try to add a light background in the content area. Thanks for releasing it free!
June 3rd, 2008 at 6:24 am
What do you mean by Custom Field ?? And how exactly do i do it ?
June 3rd, 2008 at 7:10 am
Hi Jason,
Great theme.
We are having some issues showing the thumnail image on the post. How do you show it?
Does the featured & popular articles plugin come with the theme?
Thanks for sharing,
sk
June 3rd, 2008 at 7:25 am
@Alvito… Please read the usage instructions in the above post. Custom Fields are found in WordPress when writing a post. Take a look and you will find them.
@Surfkultura… Did you read the usage instructions above???
June 3rd, 2008 at 11:08 am

June 3rd, 2008 at 2:28 pm
@JJ… There are no advertisements on MassivePress.com
June 3rd, 2008 at 4:12 pm
@Jason…
http://www.massivepress.com/advertise/

June 3rd, 2008 at 4:23 pm
@JJ… I should actually probably delete that page since I am relaunching MassivePress.com within the next month.
June 4th, 2008 at 1:05 am

any ideas?
Thanks again!!
June 7th, 2008 at 11:39 pm
I can’t get anything to show. Is there more to it than ftp, themes, select and use?
June 9th, 2008 at 10:02 am
June 10th, 2008 at 8:59 am
Thank you for the awesome theme! How do you hide the “Featured” category, so that it doesn’t show up in the listed categories?
June 11th, 2008 at 12:43 pm
@BeyondRandom… Not sure, might be on of the plugins you have installed, might be the video object causing problems.
@Dan… Are you familiar with WordPress?
@Bobby… You will find everything you need at the link below:

June 14th, 2008 at 2:43 am
I LOVE LOVE LOVE your theme. Exactly what I have been looking for. I am having a problem though. I uploaded the 140 px square pic to flickr and typed in “thumbnails” on Custom field like you said and put the link on the right hand side in the value side and I am still not getting the picture to show up. What am I doing wrong? Thanks for your help.
June 14th, 2008 at 5:03 am
Doh! Never Mind.. wrong theme.
June 14th, 2008 at 5:12 pm
Thanks Jason. The link you provided for excluding categories helped me with the categories listed under “Browse Posts By Category” but I’m having a little trouble figuring out how to remove the “Featured” listing under the title of each post.
I have tried changing “the_category” in the main index, but I can’t seem to figure it out. Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks again for the great theme.
June 14th, 2008 at 8:45 pm
Everything works, and the theme brings to life (your) ideas in dramatic fashion! I have not mastered all the easy to use features after 24 hours but my site is up and running as looks better than ever! thank you for this terrific theme!
June 14th, 2008 at 8:51 pm
OMG, where is the seconf side bar, did I download an earlier version? I only get one in the dashboard!
June 15th, 2008 at 9:21 am
disregard my messages I am using a different massive theme!
June 15th, 2008 at 11:27 pm
Thanks. Would be great if you have a demo page.
June 16th, 2008 at 11:25 am
Great job! Good design!
Can I change the home page? How? I don’t want to show all posts in the home page. Thanks
June 16th, 2008 at 12:33 pm
this one is really cool.. thanks..
selamlar..
June 17th, 2008 at 4:30 pm
I just made a smooth transition from the earlier Massive theme version. I must say you did a great job making this one much easier to install and implement! After 24 hours I really don’t miss the large picture rotator and its labor intensive cutting and pasting of pics!
My only wish is the ability to exclude a category from the front page. I would really like to soley utilize the feature category to the side bar three to post picture only related posts. With all post landing on the front page I got to add irrelevant content to begin a picture only related post.
Again, a job well done!
Now the rest of you can laugh at my earlier post when I downloaded the earlier version.
June 18th, 2008 at 6:18 am
@Jolly Green Girl… Not sure what you are doing wrong unless I could see a sample of one of your posts. I guarantee if you follow the instructions to the “T” it will work.
@daustralala… Head over to MassivePress.com for a full Demo.
@Marc… You might want to start reading up on WordPress @ WordPress.org. I wish I had time for all these kind of questions, but I just don’t.
June 18th, 2008 at 8:02 am
Hi,
Would It be possible to put a “Sideblog Articles” block, like in the Massive News Theme?
June 23rd, 2008 at 3:01 pm
Hi!
This theme is awesome, i really like using it! But i have a question. How is it possible to remove the “Featured” category under the title of each post?
Thank you!
June 24th, 2008 at 7:15 pm
Thank’s im using this on my blog.

June 26th, 2008 at 8:15 am
Hi,
I’ve enabled the massivepress theme yesterday .I’m impressed with it. thanks. but it seem not able to handle plugins like Wordpress Video Plugin or ShareThis. The blog content(i mean text) on frontpage is messed up. It gives errors next to all articles as follows . ‘Warning: call_user_func_array() [function.call-user-func-array]: First argument is expected to be a valid callback’
Is there a solution pls ? When i disable both plugins it works fine.
June 26th, 2008 at 12:26 pm
What if I don’t have or don’t want a thumbnail?
June 27th, 2008 at 9:05 am
What is the best way to switch from one them to this theme? Mostly concerned about previous posts’ images. And once I switch over Im assuming non of the old post will have thumbnail images unless I go back in and create custom fields for each one? Yikes.
I searched a ton of themes and this one is great for what im needing it for! Thanks!
June 28th, 2008 at 9:25 am
I think I find an another bug on Massive Press : when I click on a comment via the sidebar, the class post meta (date) doesn’t show on the top of the post.
June 28th, 2008 at 11:18 am
hey jason im Big fan of yr work…ur Great dude….
im Using this theme on mY Music Website http://www.itsfreemusic.com
but not gettin through that how to show my ads system with this theme….please take a look at my site and temme wat to do..
Thanx..
June 29th, 2008 at 10:33 pm
Is there a way to not use the thumbnail image in the post? So I dont have to create a custom field?
June 30th, 2008 at 5:13 am
@Chava… Yes, It is very possible, but it would be easier for you to simple use a pre-built sideblog plugin.
@Ted… All you have to do is edit “index.php” and remove
<h5>Categories: <?php the_category(', '); ?></h5>@Mallela… Sorry, I do not support 3rd party plugns.
@Roger… You would have to edit the theme to remove the thumbnail feature if you don’t want it.
@Drew… There is no getting around the fact that you will have to go back and add thumbnails for your old posts.
July 2nd, 2008 at 9:26 pm
Thanks for the great site!
I’m using it at my newly launched buyer’s guide website http://coolraker.com
Only made a few changes but its working out great so far.
July 2nd, 2008 at 9:27 pm

Thanks. add my blog theme
July 5th, 2008 at 11:56 pm
Erm, help me plz?
I’m trying to make the banner clickable *without* losing the “Home” link. I went into header.php and the relative portion of the css… but…. given the header tag is called masthead in header.php, it’s confusing me.
Can someone tell me the code to *add* to the masthead div in header.php and the relative change (if needed) in css to make keep the Home link in tact, while adding the clickable banner (155 px) feature??
Thx
July 9th, 2008 at 9:08 am
@Gavin… You can embed Vimeo with any WordPress theme really. Simply copy the embed code and place it in your post using HTML view.
July 9th, 2008 at 3:16 pm

July 14th, 2008 at 6:02 am
Hey Jason, Great theme! I was just wondering if there is a simple solution to the 404 page issue that I am getting. The issue is on the demo as well. when I put in a bad URL the main column is just… blank. I looked at all the tutorials and just can’t figure it out, if you or any other individual could help that would be great because I really enjoy the theme.
July 14th, 2008 at 2:55 pm
Jason, this is an amazing theme and I’m using it for a new site.
I’m wondering if you could provide the logo.png file without the “Your Logo” text so we could customize it easier. If that’s impossible, I’m wondering if you could tell me how to keep the existing header but insert a special logo in place of the “Your Logo” text.
Thank you,
–Shane.
July 14th, 2008 at 5:02 pm
has anyone figured out how to display a textlink ads plugin ad box under the featured content box?
please help
July 15th, 2008 at 10:23 am
Please could you tell me how to upload a youtube video with a post? I have tried several times by copying and pasting the embedded code but don’t know what i’m doing wrong?
Thanks
July 16th, 2008 at 12:54 pm
Hi,
This theme is really really nice! Thanks a lot.
I wanted to test the “Post Sidebar” . I added some widgets like “meta”, “text”… Then, just save the new configuration of the sidebar..
Press F5 to refresh the frontend.. but nothing appears… It seems not to work…? (I’am using WP 2.6)
July 17th, 2008 at 4:06 pm
on single post where it says “written by”-there is nothing there.
How do I get it to insert my name?
July 17th, 2008 at 7:39 pm
I figured out the answer to my first question but now Whenever I go onto the main page of the blog the post contents is underlined! Is there a way to get rid of it
July 18th, 2008 at 2:15 pm
I thank you very much for this brilliant theme. I am grateful to you for offering it free to the public.
I do have one question. If I want an image in an article……I can’t seem to get the text to wrap around the image. I am talking about when I hit an article to read the full text. The image is plopped either left or right (whichever I choose to do in the Wordpress editor) . I am wondering how I can get the text to wrap. I see it done perfectly in the demo…..however….I can’t seem to attain the same thing.
Any ideas?
July 18th, 2008 at 2:47 pm
Forget the above post. I fixed it with this code:
[code]
img.centered {
display: block;
margin-left: auto;
margin-right: auto;
}
img.alignright {
padding: 4px;
margin: 0 0 1px 7px;
display: inline;
}
img.alignleft {
padding: 4px;
margin: 0 7px 1px 0;
display: inline;
}
.alignright {
float: right;
}
.alignleft {
float: left;
}[/code]
July 18th, 2008 at 7:12 pm
For some reason when I go to read an article on my blog the authors name (which should be where “Written By” is located) doesn’t show my name.
How do I correct that?
July 18th, 2008 at 7:23 pm
Disregard my last post. I fixed the problem. I was my lack of wordpress knowledge that was the trouble. Not this gorgeous theme.
July 18th, 2008 at 10:48 pm
Regarding 404.php : I have found a solution that is very easy and should work for all. just copy all code from index.php and paste into 404.php then modify to what you want.
July 19th, 2008 at 7:57 pm
Hey Jason, which video plugin are you using. The way you have the Rainbow Six game trailer pop after clicking on the picture is sick.
July 19th, 2008 at 10:18 pm
hello verey butifull
July 20th, 2008 at 2:31 am
Thank you for the theme, Jason.
Clickable header: I found a solution, which works fine for me:
http://bueltge.de/wp-headerbild-verlinken/39/
(Last box. Add the code in the masthead-tag)
Everything works fine except the Video- and FeedStats-Plugin. Does anybody know a solution therefor? Maybe an other plugin than the wp Video-Plugin?
July 20th, 2008 at 8:52 pm
Where in the CSS do I change the main column width to 1024?
July 21st, 2008 at 2:00 pm
Hey There-
Love the theme. Absolutely beautiful! I need some hlep thought.
I have published my first post, and the “Featured Article” picture quilt on the side, as well as the thumbnail icon next to the post- is not working on both the latest version of Safari or FireFox. I did what was recommended in previous posts ( resize to 140 px, upload to Flickr, then change Custom Fields). but it is not working.
HELP! I really want this to workout. I can send Screenshots if need be.
thanks in advance,
Taylor
July 22nd, 2008 at 12:26 pm
@Ted and @Bobby
In order to exclude the “Featured” category from the loop and from the single post pages you have to replace:
width
cat_ID==’#')) echo $cat->cat_name . ‘ ‘;
} ?>
#= yout cat ID.
That should work like a charm. It did for me.
July 22nd, 2008 at 12:42 pm
I’ll just try again. The coe text seems to drop out.
In order to exclude the “Featured” category from the loop and from the single post pages you have to replace:
width
cat_ID=='#')) echo $cat->cat_name . ' ';
} ?>
#= yout cat ID.
If the code still won’t show go to: http://wordpress.org/support/topic/140469#post-809262 and read the soution here.
July 24th, 2008 at 9:50 pm
same problem like EmmaB.. when i go deeper into my blog (clicking posts, tags) and return back to the index my posts get underlined .. Jason or anyone solved this problem yet ? t.i.a
July 29th, 2008 at 7:54 am
I think its perfect. But my opinion is still you need to think on your comment.
July 30th, 2008 at 10:56 am
Great theme. I’ve been using grid focus but felt like there was something missing with it. Your theme has everything I always wanted while using grid focus, thanks very much!
August 5th, 2008 at 5:04 pm
Congratulations, this is a great theme!!!
I tried to use it in my blog but I have a problem because my site run on Wordpress 2.6. When my site load show an error with prototype. This is the message (in spanish):
Un script en esta página puede estar ocupado, o puede haber dejado de responder. Puede detener el script ahora, o puede continuar para ver si el script se completa.
Script: http://www.mysite.com/wp-includes/js/prototype.js?ver=1.6:341
Do you know, what’s the problem?
If you comment the these lines on header.php, there is no problem:
<script type=”text/javascript” src=”/scripts/mootools.js”>
<script type=”text/javascript” src=”/scripts/tips.js”>
I appreciate your help.
Thank you!
August 5th, 2008 at 9:00 pm
Thanks for the theme. It has been working great for me. What type of video plugin are you using to view the Hancock trailer? I like how it plays from your theme.
August 5th, 2008 at 9:10 pm
Sorry, one more question. I am new to wordpress. Where in wordpress do you paste the code to have the images show in the article post like your demo?
Thank you for you time

August 10th, 2008 at 11:46 pm
Hey, love the look of this theme. Was wondering if anyone could tell me how to have a blurb or post title under/on top of each of the pictures in the “featured” quilt?
August 11th, 2008 at 1:07 pm
Hey Jason. Great theme - currently modifying it for use on my first site.
Quick question - how did you get the tooltips on the featured quilt to neatly display ‘Click here to read…’ and then the post title? Mine seems to display half the post-title and then an excerpt from the post. Can’t seem to work out why it’s not displaying the full post title.
Any pointers appreciated.
August 11th, 2008 at 6:15 pm
I Have Added More Then 35 Featured Thumbnails But 35 is The Max how can i get more?
August 11th, 2008 at 8:30 pm
Hey, I’m a big fan of your site and themes. I think it’s amazing how you offer all this stuff for free. i absolutely love this theme, and I hate to complain, but, I don’t have Adobe Fireworks, I only have Photoshop, is there any way that you could upload a PSD file of the logo? I would be extremely grateful if you could, but if you can’t, I understand.
August 12th, 2008 at 9:54 am
Hi, I’m using your theme and i would like to change 3 things but i don’t know how ….
i would like to:
(1) move the “page” menu (home / about / contact / advertise ) to the left and put on the right the rss icons (comment and post)
(2) when i write an article and i don’t put the tumbnail picture, i would like to show a normal article and not with a white square.How can i modify the file php?
(3) and last: i would like that articles in the index page are show with links and bold words……… it’s possible??
thanks
August 13th, 2008 at 9:29 am
I have a question , I added the thumbnail on the post - it works perfectly.
My question is this … when I click on the post title, I want to see the actual image not the 140 x 140 .

Is possible to change Featured to show all Pages instead of using posts?
I was playing around with this code,
Featured & Popular Articles
<a href=”" class=”Tips2″ title=” :: Click here to read this article…”><img src=”ID, $key, true); ?>” alt=”" />
But I FAILED miserably.. Any ideas?
Thanks!

Hi
Thanks for a great theme. Was just hoping I could get the name of the font used in the logo?
Thanks again, really appreciate your work.

Thanks for the nice theme. It has worked very well for my site
http://www.oldbookart.com/
and I have found it easy to tweak for my needs.
One question: Is is possible to change the number of thumbnail posts shown on front page. While I am not an expert at decyphering code I can usually find basic stuff like this, but I am stuck with this one.
Thanks again.
(Shane: Up near the top of this page it says the font used for the logo is “Arno Pro.”

@John
Thanks, I could not see the wood for the tree’s!
BTW, if you mean you want to change how many post’s to have displayed on your front page, you change that in admin–>settings–>reading and change blog post’s shown at most. If you mean something else……..!

Hi Jason.
I have tried to figure this out but am resorting to asking you!
Ok..I have created a “Featured” category and uploaded a 140×140 image. I have used “thumbnail” key and the image location as value. Fine, post thumb works as intended. The Featured “Quilt” works as intended also apart from the dimension and therefore quality of the image. The image in the quilt is distorted and when I check out the image dimension with web developer it is 140×140. The quilt at massivepress.com when I check out image dimensions has 90×90? The css is correct with width and height set at 90×90.
I have followed a few links from the comment section to other guy’s sites and the same applies there. I have my site on localhost so have no link.
Check out the quilt at Coolraker.com though.
Thanks in advance.
Appologies if it is obvious!

hey jason, love the theme by the way!! just a question… how could i just put the wrapper, kinda like mtv.com.. where the main content, the three columns has white background, and then the sides to have another background(an image background). Kinda like the Massive News Theme as well. I have been trouble trying to figure this out.

Hi,
I’m having a problem with the text on the main page being underlined. This happens usually when I’ve been surfing around my blog. Can you tell me how to fix this?
Other than that i LOVE this theme…
Thank you

Hi everybody,
This theme does not support tags on wordpress 2.6.1, does it? Has anybody been able to display post tags?
Thx!
August 24th, 2008 at 8:34 am
Its me again.. I’ve solved it… add this to line 9 of single.php (for instance):
name . ‘ ‘;
}
}
?>
August 24th, 2008 at 8:38 am
Sorry… the code is:
$posttags = get_the_tags();
if ($posttags) {
foreach($posttags as $tag) {
echo $tag->name . ‘ ‘;

Nice theme! Just trying to work out how to integrate google adsense into this…
August 28th, 2008 at 6:10 am
@barcoderevies… That would be pretty easy by adding a new text widget to the sidebar and pasting your adsense code.
@rusmir… Are you running any new plugins in the last few days?
August 29th, 2008 at 10:46 am
Hi great theme, but I can’t figure out how you have the image in a post. As I have the one on the front page but i cant get the image to display at the top of the paragraph and to the right.
